以大膽爭議題材著稱的知名導演婁燁，從影多年以一部部驚人作品在國際打響名號，被推崇為中國第六代導演代表人物。不論是《頤和園》、《春風沉醉的夜晚》，到勇奪金馬獎6項大獎的《推拿》，都一再展現其過人功力。而今年20週年的《蘇州河》則是將婁燁推上國際的最早作品，不但一舉捧紅剛出道的周迅與當時的藝文片愛將賈宏聲，更在荷蘭鹿特丹影展奪下「最佳影片老虎獎」殊榮。儘管後來未能在大陸上映，卻仍在影迷心中留下重要位置，被推崇為藝文電影界的地下神片。電影今年邁進20週年首度迎來數位修復版本，消息一出即引起海內外影迷爆棚熱烈討論，紛紛稱羨台灣影迷得以有機會進戲院朝聖這部經典之作。
《蘇州河》是婁燁的第3部長片作品，他堅持自編自導，並在拍攝過程中仍一邊創作修改，以獨具的抒情文學性敘事、似真似假的人物設定、神秘的主觀旁白，創作出迷人上海都會裡，底層小人物不凡的淒美故事。婁燁獨具慧眼相中當時毫無名氣的周迅擔當主演，兩人在一次酒吧聚會上結識，婁燁立刻被周迅的純真美貌與機靈性格打動，看見了她的潛力，決定大膽起用她擔任女主角，而《蘇州河》後的周迅果真一戰成名躍上國際舞台，如今無疑是華語影壇代表性的影響力人物，不只4度入圍金馬獎，更曾以《如 果·愛》奪得影后。
電影當年製作後期因缺乏資金陷入瓶頸，卻也因此機緣讓婁燁結識了法國製片人菲利浦泊拜（Philippe Bober），決定在最後一刻加入製作行列，並協助找來歐洲剪接師與配樂家齊心催生作品，讓本片多了分異國色彩。當年這群默默無聞的年輕藝術家現在都是影壇重量級人物，菲利浦泊拜近年則以《抓狂美術館》（The Square）奪下坎城影展金棕櫚大獎，去年作品《小魔花》（Little Joe）更勇奪坎城影后殊榮，而這次《蘇州河》數位修復版就是由其團隊親自操刀，重新修復出細緻聲音與數位高畫質影片，將帶給觀眾全新的迷人奇幻體驗，選在今年20週年紀念重映別具深刻意義。
